BUYING GUIDE

How to choose an essential oil diffuser.

Six questions to ask before you buy an essential oil diffuser, in order of what makes the biggest difference.

01

Where will it live?

Bedroom, living room, nightstand or car. Choose for the room first; everything else follows.

02

Water or no water?

Water diffusers (Ceramic, Wood) turn water and a few drops of oil into a cool mist. Waterless ones (Night Light, CalmRide, Pillar) run straight from the oil bottle: nothing to fill, nothing to spill.

03

How long should it run?

Plug-in water diffusers run until the tank is empty: up to 10 hours, enough for a full night. Waterless ones run far longer: up to 40 hours on one bottle (Night Light) or 60 hours per charge (CalmRide). Pillar plugs in and runs on the timer you set in its app.

04

How quiet is it?

In a bedroom, noise matters most. Our Ceramic, Wood and Night Light diffusers are lab-tested quieter than a whisper, and the CalmRide stays under 35 dB.

05

Plug-in or battery?

Plug-in for a spot it never leaves. Battery if you want to move it between rooms or take it in the car.

06

Light and looks.

You will see it every day. Ceramic and Wood have a warm light you can turn fully off; the Night Light doubles as a bedside lamp.

Water or waterless

Ultrasonic vs waterless essential oil diffusers: which is better?

Neither is better everywhere. It depends on how you want to use it.

01

Ultrasonic (water) diffusers

Ultrasonic essential oil diffusers mix water with a few drops of oil into a cool mist that spreads through a room. A small bottle of oil lasts a long time; you refill the tank after each run. Ours: Ceramic Diffuser, Wood Diffuser.

02

Waterless diffusers

Waterless essential oil diffusers turn pure oil into a fine mist with no water at all. No tank to clean and a much longer run, but they use oil faster. Ours: Night Light Diffuser, CalmRide Car Diffuser, Pillar Cold-Air Diffuser. More in our guide: What is a waterless diffuser?

03

Our advice

For an evening routine in a bedroom or living room, choose ultrasonic. For no upkeep on a nightstand, a desk or in the car, choose waterless. For a large open living room, choose the Pillar.

Real ceramic

How to tell a real ceramic diffuser from a ceramic-look one.

Many “ceramic” essential oil diffusers are plastic with a ceramic-style finish. Three quick checks.

01

Read the material line

A real one says “ceramic” or “porcelain” cover. Be careful with “ceramic-look”, “ceramic-style” or “ceramic finish”, or with ABS or PP plastic listed as the outer shell.

02

Feel the weight

Ceramic is heavy for its size: our Ceramic Diffuser weighs 1.87 lb. A plastic shell the same size feels noticeably lighter.

03

Know what is inside

Every ultrasonic diffuser, ours included, has a plastic water tank (ours is BPA-free). The ceramic is the cover you see and touch, and that is what makes it look like décor. More in our guide: Are ceramic diffusers good for your home?

FAQ

Essential oil diffuser questions, answered.

Which essential oil diffuser is best for sleep?

The Ceramic Diffuser. It is lab-tested at 27.3 dB, quieter than a whisper. Its warm light dims or turns fully off, and it switches itself off when the water runs out. If you never want to refill, choose the Night Light Diffuser.

Which diffuser is best for a large living room?

The Pillar Cold-Air Diffuser. It turns pure essential oil into a dry, cold-air mist with no water and is rated for open rooms up to 1,076 sq ft. For a smaller living room, the Wood Diffuser has the biggest water tank in the range.

How long does each diffuser run?

The Ceramic Diffuser and Wood Diffuser plug in, so they run until the water runs out: up to 10 hours per tank on the on/off (intermittent) setting, or 4–5 hours of non-stop mist. The Night Light Diffuser runs up to 40 hours on one oil bottle, or 6–8 hours in water mode. The CalmRide Car Diffuser runs up to 60 hours per charge. The Pillar Cold-Air Diffuser plugs in and runs on the work-and-pause schedule you set in its app.

Is it OK to leave a diffuser on overnight?

Yes. Every Scentreat essential oil diffuser switches itself off: Ceramic and Wood when the water runs out, the Night Light automatically, the CalmRide on a 1, 2 or 3-hour timer, and the Pillar on the timer you set in its app. Set it on a flat surface away from bedding and keep the room ventilated. More in our guide: Can you sleep with a diffuser on?

How many drops of essential oil should I use?

For a full tank, 8–12 drops in the Ceramic Diffuser and 9–13 in the Wood Diffuser give a medium scent. Use fewer for a lighter scent. The waterless diffusers need no drops: you attach the oil bottle. More in our guide: How many drops in a diffuser?

Does a diffuser come with essential oil?

Yes. Every Scentreat essential oil diffuser comes with free oils: a 3-oil set (Lemon, Peppermint and Eucalyptus) with the Ceramic, Wood, Night Light and CalmRide, and a 6-oil starter set with the Pillar, and each one works with any of our 36 pure essential oils.

What if I don’t like it?

Every Scentreat diffuser has a 100-day money-back guarantee and a 1-year limited warranty.
